Chateau La Lauzette Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux 2015

Chateau La Lauzette is situated on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary nestled in the Haut-Medoc region of the Bordeaux, sitting alongside iconic sub regions such as Margaux, St Julien and Pauillac. The left bank is synonymous with cabernet sauvignon, the world’s most planted grape. It is the birthplace for cabernet sauvignon as well as its oft-forgotten parent cabernet franc. Most left bank wines are cabernet sauvignon dominant, however are almost always blended with one or more of the other 4 Bordeaux varietals: merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot.

This superb blend is 60% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 5% cabernet franc and exemplifies the terroir of the left bank Bordeaux. It is classed ‘cru bourgeois’ which means it’s special. It has slightly more sturdy tannins than your typical merlot-dominant right bank wine, yet they are super fine-boned and ultra-easy to whiz down the gullet, but always lurking and coating your inner cheeks with delicious lashings. You just know it will lap up a piece of BBQ meat like a labrador does a bone! It has cassis, blackberry, and pepper on the nose, deep dark fruits on the palate and barely a wafer of oak bears its presence as it is perfectly in sync with the fruit, mostly just adding that succulent texture. In the background as always with Bordeaux are those chewy, earthy notes that define this style.

To fully get why cabernet sauvignon is so often more sophisticated, more rounded when blended with its other family members, you have to try a left bank Bordeaux, where the cabernet story all began. This is an award-winning cru bourgeois wine at a price that you just can’t imagine in Australia for such a quality, rare artisan wine. We have secured the last pallets of this on the planet. As with all our wines, it is available exclusively through Popsy & JJ. We tasted this one with a BBQ rack of lamb (click for recipe) and it was a rare moment of joy!
